Implementation of Revised Fees Payable to the South African Nursing Council for Accreditation of Nursing Education Institutions

PURPOSE

The purpose of this circular is to inform providers of Nursing Education and Training, Provincial Departments of Health and stakeholders about the implementation of revised fees payable to the South African Nursing Council (SANC) for accreditation of Nursing Education Institutions.

IMPLEMENTATION

The Council, at its meeting of 28-29 March 2012, approved the fees as outlines below.  The revised fees are in accordance with the cost of processing applications, conducting accreditation visits and service to Nursing Education Institutions.

1.    Motivation for fees payable for the accreditation of Nursing Education Institutions

1.1    The SANC, as an accredited Education and Training Quality Assurance body (ETQA), is required to promote the quality of education and training amongst education providers.

1.2    The activities to promote quality have an impact on the administrative and resources requirements, with considerable financial implications.

1.3    In view of the above ETQA activities, the SANC has introduced fees that are payable to the SANC in respect of the accreditation of Nursing Education Institutions.

1.4    With the implementation of these fees, the South African Nursing Council will be in a position to improve on the quality and quantity of resources required for the accreditation process.

2.    Accreditation fees

Fees are determined in the following manner:

Implementation of a Penalty on Candidates Found to be Cheating on Examinations

 

PURPOSE

The purpose of this circular is to inform providers of Nursing Education and Training, Provincial Departments of Health and stakeholders about the implementation of a penalty on candidates found to be cheating during examinations.

 

IMPLEMENTATION

The Council, at its meeting of 28-29 March 2012, approved the implementation of a penalty as stated below:

1.1    Students found copying during Council examinations should not be allowed to write another Council examination for a period of two years.

1.2    The names of such students should be flagged in the Council’s system in order to prevent admission to other Nursing Education Institutions.

 

This sanction becomes applicable as from 1 May 2012.

Implementation of the Improvement of the Current Examination System of all Programmes where Examinations are Conducted by the South African Nursing Council

 

PURPOSE

The purpose of this circular is to inform providers of Nursing Education and Training, Provincial Departments of Health and stakeholders about the implementation of improvement on the current examination system of all programmes where examinations are conducted by the South African Nursing Council.  This is done in order to:

minimise and eliminate the security risk associated with examinations, including setting papers, typing, packing and dispatching (internally), distribution (externally), invigilation and security of examination papers and scripts in transit.
reduce the time for the processing of examinations and publication of examination results.

 

IMPLEMENTATION

The Council, at its meeting of 28-29 March 2012, approved the implementation of the improvement of the current examination system of all programmes where examinations are conducted by the South African Nursing Council as stated below:

Changing of examination schedules from three times a year to two times a year (May and November)
Reducing the number of examination centres in metropolitan cities, but retaining existing examination centres in remote areas
Centralising the marking of examination scripts per province
Extending the period for the moderation of examination scripts from five days to ten days.

 

This circular is applicable from 1 January 2013.
